This site i found here has some really good points to what makes a web site good. http://www.webreference.com/greatsite.html
Depending on the site you have the key element is to have original content and information that is credible and up to date. I believe that if you have original content it will capture other peoples interest a lot more then it would by having boring "Default" information. New information that the site shares with the users, generate site activity usually more wit the users then the amount of information that the site has provided. I also think graphics and design is something that can make a site great too. Even if the information isn't overall the best a great appeal can draw myself into the site even if its by accident for something i don't necessarily need to be looking at. Sites that maintain a balanced of design and flash tend to be able to grasp users also because, not always do people have the most up to date technology. It allows the users with any sort of connection and computer speed to be able to look around the site. To have it load up quick and look great is important Navigation lastly i think is as important as the other two. If you can roam around the site easily from the navigation whether its from links or other tools, makes it a good start to having a great site.
